Lorrie, Pete was an excellent infielder on the baseball team.  He was smart, savvy, covered a lot of ground and had a good, accurate arm.  If I recall correctly, Pete was a co-captain along with Pat Diggles.  Pete's fielding talents supplemented and enhanced OB's considerable abilities  as a pitcher.  So, OB has an appreciation for Pete and gives him the bonus of some ice cream.  We'll see what OB has to wish Dick Brown, his catcher and battery mate.  Maybe some syrup on the ice cream.  Of course, I could be way off base on this ( in which case OB may pick me off).  I've been wrong before as my ex will be pleased to verify.  Doesn't mean you can't get your hopes up for ice cream wishes.

I love reading your baseball memories.  Happy belated birthdays to Phil and Pete.

I've heard that in your younger years you all would mow the grass of an empty field behind Susie Q and set up your games.  Lovely to imagine.

Yikes, thanks for mowing that field, it was at the end of my street. One day there was a girls’ football game ther. This involved Mary Strauss, myself for sure and I think Mary Blanche, Judy, Sue, Janet, Andi or some combo. Also a key player on the field was Mary’s little powder blue push button Dodge Duster. All just a little work out in readiness for cole slaw and french fries at Suzie Q. It may or not have been on this particular day (check in here Mary) that Mary got her finger stuck in a coke bottle. Mr. Cantalin showered her with several interesting facial expressions before providing rescue services. We had so much silly fun!

Always fun to read posts that include fond memories!  Facebook recently posted a picture of Brach's chocolate-covered cherries and asked if anyone remembered them.  I fondly remember Sr. Regina, our Latin teacher, who kept a stash at the back of the classroom so she could have her fix.  Maybe that's why she was one of the sweetest nuns of the bunch!!

Hi all, this is a response from Mary Strauss on Lucia"s story about the football game. Mary has not signed in yet to be on the blog but she wanted everyone to know that there were a number of girl football games and Lucia was right on about everything said, however Mary said she wasn"t real sure about the finger stuck in the bottle story since Mary had a habit of doing that sort of thing often, In fact at Mass one day Mary was standing along side a pew ready to go up for communion, but she wasn't moving so one of the nuns came over and said Mary go up and get communion, Mary said I can't, the nun said why not, and Mary said because my finger is stuck in the candle holder along side the pew. Needless to say the nun had to get a maintenance man to come and get her finger out.

Hello Everyone:  I finally figured out how to post a comment. Thanks to Karen, my wife, who encourage me to log in. I took a guess at my password and it worked. The golf outing sounds like a lot of fun. I will try and attend in 2020. I read Lucia's post about playing football at Susie-Q field. I wish I had seen that game. All my favorite girls participated. Thank you for the birthday wishes.  My key interests now are substitute teaching in Middle and High School and coaching my grandson in golf. Karen and I recently downsized and we are having the "new" house remodeled. The contractor said the first project would be done one week.  It has been six weeks and it is only 95% done!  I think we are living the movie "the money pit". Every project takes a lot longer then expected. Have a great day!  Pete

The past responses have been priceless. Diggs and I were just talking about the susie Q field a few weeks ago and how when we weren't playing there we were playing baseball up at the church gravel parking lot. It's really weird but I carry a piece of gravel in my left elbow from sliding on the the church lot and a scar on my right forarm from the Susie Q field from sliding head first into third base in one of our games there and the third baseman was wearing track shoes and spiked me with a shoe on my arm.

It was great hearing about the girls football games on the field. Hey guys, how come we didn't know about those games, we could have had some wonderful touch games together with the girls.

Dan, thanks for passing on the Mary Krause story, that really sounds of Mary, Sometimes it was like the lights were on but nobody was home. And that's why we loved her and enjoyed being around her. I hope she will get on the blog. She has been missed.

It was really great to here from Pete. I'm glad you got on and don't be a stranger. You too Phil, keep up being on to share your ups and downs like the rest of us;

Since Pete an Roy are with us, and Mike Young has shook loose baseball memories, I would like to see if anyone remembers our last high school baseball game? I think it was with either St. Ambrose or St. Mary and it was at their field. I have my memories of that game and would like to see if anyone else has memories of it?

Last but not least, Lorrie, I have not said anything to the ladies about having ice cream with your cake because I didn't want any of you to lose your shaply figures but you want to pig out go ahead, none of us will say anything if you want to look as bad as some of us. You would just become sweeter.

Did'nt mean to go on but the memories have really been shook.

To all my fellow grunts, celebrate the way you know how and be glad we made it back to the land of the round eyes, the greatest land on earth.

Be sure to have a great day and you know damn well there will be cake and ICE CREAM for everybody.

Enjoy Veterans Day 2019.

Thanks to all my fellow vets.  I am so glad that those of us who went to Viet Nam came back.  Several guys I trained with did not.  We have American flags lining many of the streets.  The Pinehusrt Resort has a Veterans' Week.  There was a parade on Saturday, a concert on Sunday.  One of the movie theaters is playing patriotic movies all week.  The Fire Department sold flags which vets, families of vets and other patriotic Americans bought and placed in a field.  They only had 400 and all were sold, placed in the field with a vet's name attached.  There was a ceremony where each name was read to the crowd (close to 1,000).  Whenever the name referred to a fallen vet, there was a lone bell rung.  A band played a multitude of songs - America the Beautiful, Anchors Aweigh, etc.  There was a single bugler who played a very slow, emotional, "Taps" - not many dry eyes.  We had a fly over with several vintage warplanes.  There will be parachutists dropping onto the driving range.  During the week, there are several tee times set aside for vets and current military personnel.  Some courses charge a cart fee, some others donate it all.  The Pinehurst Resort will have a day for wounded warriors, letting them play course #2 (A world class tournament course) gratis and will even pay the caddy fees.  Several local restaurants offer vets and current military either half off meals or free ones.  As an aside, Sunday was Remembrance Sunday in the UK - I was invited to a gathering of UK immigrants and/or citizens to watch a TV special from several spots in Britain commemorating their fallen military. Very touching.         On a completely different note, I wish a Merry Unbirthday to all with or without cake and/or ice cream.

Mike Young, your description of the wonderful ceremonies gave me goose bumps!  Again, to all who served, THANK YOU!!

Arlene, I wish you, and any of our classmates who would have been touched by the ceremony, could have been here.  Thank you, OB and Janet and let us not forget the contribution spouses of our military who had to wait for the return of their loved ones.

Being a veteran I understand the good that is done in thanking those who put their lives out for us.  I continue to thank every veteran, firefighter and police that I run into for their service.  God Bless America the land of the free.

Happy birthday, Jean, the girl with the shy smile.  Make this year as good as it can be, cake with or without the ice cream.  And a Merry Unvirthday to all the rest of us.

Well said, Rick, we sometimes forget others who have protected us and our society.

Sue, it is sad when we lose a loved one and I hope that you are coping well with your loss.  On the other hand it is such a blessing ot have special people in  our lives and I hope that you can take some solace and rejoice in the multitude of things on many levels that you were fortunate enough to be able to share together.

Sue so sorry to hear about your loss.  I sing in our funeral choir and it is always hard to hear the stories of lost love.  But we have memories of them as a gift from God that will remain with us forever.  Prayers go out to you and your family.
